How Can I Save Money on Energy Bills in the Summer?

June 17, 2020

You know your energy bills will rise during the summer, but you can still keep them within reasonable limits with just a few simple steps. First, it means making your air conditioner system more efficient.

Change the Air Filters

Your ducted AC system will more smoothly circulate air if there are no obstructions in the vents. To this end, you should regularly be replacing the filter in the return vent. The frequency will depend on the type of filter. The cheapest type is fiberglass filters, which last 30 days, while a better type is the pleated filter, which is effective for 60 to 90 days.

Request AC Maintenance

There are other important steps for maintaining smooth airflow, including duct cleaning and coil cleaning. However, these may not be DIY projects. At Carlos Warren & Son, we can perform these services and more during an annual maintenance visit. We can pinpoint small problems with your AC system here in Dexter, MO, and eliminate them before they compromise efficiency and contribute to higher bills.

Program the Thermostat

Once you’ve ensured that the AC will run efficiently, you want to see to it that it doesn’t run unnecessarily. If you own a programmable thermostat, now is the time to program it. You can save 10% on your energy bills if, for eight hours a day, you set the thermostat 7 to 10 degrees higher than its normal setting.

Use the Ceiling Fan

While ceiling fans don’t produce cold air, they still provide you with a cooler feeling. This, the U.S. Department of Energy says, will allow you to raise the thermostat some four degrees without loss of comfort. Just remember that you’ll only see savings if you use fans and the AC together.
